Ballpoint Illustration / Paper Penguin
Part of my ballpoint origami series!
The first photo below shows a work in progress, because when I draw traditionally, I have a habit of taking photos along the way as some sort of real-life "save" function in case I mess it up later. Does anyone else do that? I think it's been so firmly beaten into me to "save your work regularly!" that the instinct kicks in, even on paper. 😅
The second photo shows what my left hand tends to look like by the end of a ballpoint pen piece. With all that cross hatching, the ink can build up on the nib and I have to get rid of it or it leaves splotches. For the most part I try to get rid of that build up on scrap paper or whatever, but invariably I fall into the habit of using the most convenient surface available: my other hand, holding the paper I'm working on steady. 🙃
The third photo is a mock-up of how this might look framed. I drew this mostly as a card for a friend who's about to welcome a new baby to the world, and I like the idea of getting it printed on art paper so that he could stick it up on the wall afterwards if he wanted to. A multifunctional card, as it were? But I digress! (And the printers are sadly not operating during lockdown.) Anyway, penguins always remind me of the way young toddlers stand - all puffed out and looking terribly unstable - so it seemed like a good choice for the occasion!
